The Books of Hours

The Books of Hours are books which contain prayers for the lay people; they were developed from the breviaries that priests used to have for their devotion.

The royalty and nobility used to order these books because not only did they want to express their personal devotion when they prayed everyday or read some texts from the Gospels included in these books, but they also wanted to enjoy looking at the magnificent miniatures which were lavishly decorated and illuminated and made exclusively for them by the best artists of that age.

More than 500 years afterwards, having in our hands a facsimile reproduction of some of the most remarkable copies of this kind of medieval codices which have come to us, we cannot avoid feeling like the old kings and queens who spent high amounts of money in order to be able to look at every detail of these exquisite bound jewels for long hours.
