Civitates Orbis Terrarum
This great city atlas directed by Georg Braun and illustrated
mainly by Franz Hogenberg, includes 546 perspectives,
explanations, bird´s eye views and opinions about cities all
around the world. Braun was the main writer of the text,
continuing in this way Abraham Ortelius´s work in the “Teatrum
Orbis Terrarum”. Franz Hogenberg made most of the illustrations
for the “Theatrum...” by Ortelius, and most of them for the “Civitates...”,
and he was possibly the promoter of the project. The
illustrations by Hogenberg were made taking as a point of
reference some drawings made by more than a hundred artists;
among them, it is worth pointing out Georg and Jacob Hoefnagel,
Jacob van Deventer, Heinrich Rantzau and Sebastian Münster.
This atlas is also a work of art, a highly valuable instrument
for those history and urban development lovers; just by looking
at any of its illustrations, one can value the importance and
magnitude of each city, its walls, the layout of its streets,
the farming environment or the size of its ports. Each map
includes a text which explains the history of the city, its
geographical situation and a description of its main commercial
activities; these texts stimulate the imagination of any 16th,
and why not 21st century, reader.
